Baking the perfect pizza requires not only quality ingredients and the right recipe, but also the right tools. Much like a skilled carpenter or a master painter, the artisan pizza maker’s toolset is a crucial aspect of the craft. Let’s dive into the essential pizza baking tools that every home chef needs to start their pizza making journey.

The first, and arguably the most important tool, is a pizzasteel, like our Gourmetrics Pizzastahl, or at least a pizza stone. These baking surfaces replicate the high heat of a traditional pizza oven, creating the signature crispy crust we all love. Pizzasteels, in particular, are superior at retaining heat and distributing it evenly across the pizza base, resulting in faster cooking times and a perfectly baked crust.

A pizza peel is the second essential tool in your kitchen arsenal. A peel is a shovel-like tool used to slide the pizza onto and off the hot pizza stone or steel in the oven. While some recommend choosing a wooden peel for launching the pizza and a metal peel for turning and retrieving the pizza, this seems to be a bit over the top for amateurs. Check the size of the pizza peel to ensure it fits the size of the pizza you plan to launch.
We have been very happy with the “Pizzaschaufel” when beginning. We are currently using the Epicurean product, which is made from upcycled paper and can be put in the dishwasher as well.

Next, a pizza wheel or pizza cutter will be your best friend when it’s time to slice your finished pie. While a large kitchen knife could technically do the trick, nothing beats the clean, effortless cut of a well-sharpened pizza wheel gliding through your fresh-from-the-oven pizza. A rolling pin is necessary to roll out your pizza dough. However, many professional pizza makers prefer to hand-roll their pizza dough to prevent the dough from getting too dense and losing the air bubbles that give a nice texture to the crust. With a little practice, you’ll have the knack of hand-stretching your dough!

A kitchen scale is another essential pizza-making tool. Baking is a precise science, and that’s especially true when making pizza dough. Measuring your ingredients by weight rather than volume can greatly improve the consistency and quality of your dough.

So whether you’re a beginner just getting started or a seasoned pro looking to perfect your pizza, having the right tools can make all the difference. Remember, it’s not just about having the best tools, it’s about knowing how to use them effectively. Invest in quality, take care of them, and they’ll serve you well in your pizza-making adventures.
